Mark Johnston > Tokyo's Shinjuku Ward is home to the city's metropolitan government office complex and a cluster of some of Japan's tallest buildings. From left are visible the profiles of Tokyo Opera City, Shinjuku Park Tower ["Lost in Translation"], the twin towers of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Office buildings [TMG1 and 243 m high] just right of center, the pointed NTT Docomo Yoyogi Building [240 m], the Shinjuku Mitsui Building, the curve-sided Tokyo Mode Gakuen Cocoon Tower, and the Sompo Insurance Building.

At lower right is the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium, rebuilt in 1991. The original facilities at this site were built in 1954 for the World Wrestling Championships and used in the 1964 Summer Olympics. The dark area at middle left is Yoyogi Park and the Meiji Shrine.
Mark Johnston > Tokyo's Shibuya district - a popular shopping and nightlife area. Directly below is Shibuya Station, and at the lower left corner, Shibuya Crossing, one of the most famous intersections in Tokyo, ringed by tall buildings whose facades carry huge video screens. In the center is Shibuya Cross Tower. At right of center on the horizon is silvery Roppongi Hills, and just to the right of it, Tokyo Tower. Near the left edge of the photo, in the distance is the pointed NTT Docomo Yoyogi Building.
Mark Johnston > A blazing sun descends over Western Tokyo. In the foreground, blossoming cherry trees in Aoyama Cemetary, and beyond, the winged roof of the Tokyo National Gymnasium in Yoyogi. On the horizon lie the mountains of the Hakone area north of Mt. Fuji, which stands outside the left margin of this photo.
Mark Johnston > Autumn leaves on a quiet pathway in Tokyo's Shinjuku Gyoen garden. The focus/out-of-focus effect was accomplished with a special lens on the camera, not by altering the image digitally.
Mark Johnston > Sunrise on Tokyo's Sumida River. The famous Sukiji fish market is the brightly-lit complex at left.

The nearest bridge is the Kachidoki ["shout of victory"] Bridge, erected in 1940 to commemorate the battle of Lushun during the Russo-Japanese War.

Mark Johnston > A fine summer evening descends on Tokyo. Looking eastward from Shibuya, the two tallest structures visible are the massive Roppongi Hills complex, opened in April 2003 [54 stories/238 meters high], and Tokyo Tower, completed in 1958 [333 meters high - the tallest man-made structure in Japan].
